Her credits as a Recording Artist – Singer, Composer and Producer appear in major motion pictures and she has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues.

She developed a reputation as an International Artist (though born in Hot Springs Arkansas) by being involved in Internationally-flavored and culturally enriched projects. Her song “El Llamar de Pasión – Call of the Wild” was featured in the ACADEMY AWARD WINNER for Best Picture, Crash and was also chosen to promote Oliver Stone’s Persona Non Grata for HBO. She was the Featured Vocalist in the 20th Century Fox epic, One Night With the King and her songs, voice and persona have been featured in numerous feature films such as The House of Sand and Fog (Dreamworks) in which she also appeared and The Keeper – The Legend of Omar Khayyam (Guide Company Films) with Academy Award Winner Vanessa Redgrave, in which she also played the exotic Court Entertainer and was also the Executive Producer of the soundtrack. She has also appeared in and provided music for many other independent feature films and television shows and was the featured Vocalist for Sony Playstation’s Parasite Eve, a mega popular International Hit.

On screen, Shani has played a variety of roles from a sultry femme fatale to a seductive ancient temptress and her recent role of a Detective in the upcoming Guardian Angel. Her debut film role was the feature film Crossworlds with Rutger Hauer, Josh Charles and Jack Black and she also has several episodic television credits in her archives as a young girl in her early days in Los Angeles.

Shani has also been a featured Artist in many high profile events including the Countdown for Barack Obama and later followed as the Producer of the Inaugural Purple Ball’s show in Washington D.C with Performances with IL DIVO. Equal parts actress, singer, songwriter, and producer, Shani is a skilled juggler keeping each of her talents in a neat and perfect balance. From an early age, Shani Rigsbee felt The Call of the Wild to travel and expand her sphere from beyond her birthplace of Hot Springs, Arkansas. Who would have guessed that this International talent actually stems from Bill Clinton’s hometown? As a young girl, Shani would spend hours singing to the artists of the day while her father played drums and she would produce plays and concerts in her family’s garage for the neighbors. Encouraging her passion for the arts, her family threw caution to the winds taking the Southern cheerleader and choirgirl to the City of Angels, Los Angeles, to help her launch her career so she could be more exposed to training and performance.

How Do You As An Indie Artist Make A Good Living From Your Music

April 7, 2014
Post Image

Do you have a million dollars? Most likely the answer is “no”. Are you trying to make it on mainstream US radio and promote to mediabase stations and hit the top 40? If you don’t have a million dollars to invest then you’re wasting your time. But you can make a good living from your music.

By wanting to make a living out of your music you have decided to go into business for yourself. That’s right, you have now attached the word business to your music. Any smart business person will have a business plan.

STEP ONE:    First thing you need is a good song. One that everyone can relate to and has a memorable  melody and a good hook line.

STEP TWO:   A good recording and production is everything. Radio compresses the file and if you record  it on a computer at home, that 24 bit is now 16 bit and after radio compresses it, it’s 6 to 8 bit. Do yourself a favor- go to a professional recording studio with a track record. Record on great equipment and use a skilled engineer / producer to help mix and master.

STEP THREE:  Distribution. We are not a fan of digital distribution. We used to be before deals were made to stream music practically for free. It costs you money to create it- why give it away for free? As an alternative,  manufacture cd’s and vinyl with some great artwork. Place them on your website for sale and sell them at your performances.

STEP FOUR:   All business has to advertise or no one would know they exist and would not have any business. The same goes for you being an artist. You may have the best music in the world, but unless you advertise no one will know you exist. In this case your advertising budget includes going to radio, which is still the most viable way to get heard and to be able to tour. Hopefully you will do your investigation and choose a good radio promoter. One that goes to FM stations in all markets all over the world – not just a few stations in the US. It’s a big world out there.  This is your best chance with a limited budget to make the most of your advertising dollars. We say, FM stations, because these stations always have venues that advertise with them.

STEP FIVE:   Once your radio promotion has began, you contact the stations that are playing you and thank them. You offer them radio liners, radio interviews and most importantly, offer to send them a dozen promo give- away cds. Radio likes to offer their listening audience give- aways. To give your cds away, they play you more, mention who you are more and increase your exposure. Once you have done this you are that radio stations friend. So ask the stations that are playing you who their advertising venues are. Get their contact information. Call, email those venues. Tell them you are playing on xyz radio station in their town and want to come to their town to perform. Let the radio stations know you are going to do this and they will back you because if the venue hires you the venue will hire them to advertise the performance. This will get you even more exposure on that radio station. Radio will love you because they got the venues advertising dollars because of you. You get a performance date that is well advertised and a radio station that is playing your music and supporting you. Most likely when you go to perform you will have a full house of people who came to see you. You will sell merchandise, gain fans and if you do a good performance be asked to come back again. Everyone wins.

Odds are  you will not become a superstar overnight but it will build your business. It will most likely take 3 or 4 single releases. It is a lot of hard work, but it gives you the possibility of building  a business off which you can make a comfortable living.

Singing Winning Songs, by Jeannie Deva

April 7, 2014
Post Image

Do you want your audition submissions to grab the judges’ attention? Wouldn’t you love to have your songs selected by music supervisors for movies or TV shows? How about your band’s YouTube video going viral because it is such an awesome performance? Well the key to this is the passion and emotional sincerity of your vocal performance.

I’ve met many singers who think they have to be perfect in every way before they begin singing for audiences. This misguided belief impedes them from becoming truly passionate, confident and fully developed singers.

Here’s why.

Reach Out and Touch Somebody

Singing is about communicating and sharing feelings, concepts, images, dreams and spirituality with others. We always remember performances that have moved us emotionally, inspired or transported us and ignited our inner fire.

When you begin to perform for a live audience, you start to develop the different facets of singing and emotional expression that culminate in that all important talent: touching their hearts. Singers who rush into the recording studio before they have enough live performance experience are most likely to lack the magical quality of emotional believability that separates the great performers from the rest.

Create a Focus Group

Receiving good feedback will speed your growth as an emotionally impactful performer. Arrange to have a few friends/family members present at your performances as a kind of “focus group.” Beforehand, let them know you’ll be asking them about each of the following elements so they can observe more accurately. If you’re doing this to prepare for a recording, have them listen with their eyes closed.

Then, after your performance, find out the following: What did you do to engage them? Did you do anything that distracted them from experiencing a complete involvement with each song? As part of critiquing a live performance, also get their input on how you transitioned from one song to the next, how you moved on stage and handled the stage environment.

If you performed with others, how did you interact with the rest of the band and them with you? Did you handle the mic and mic stand in a professional or disruptive manner? Get them to respond to as many details of your performance as possible. All of these details combine and culminate in an emotionally impactful, engaging and memorable performance.

Don’t unquestioningly accept all feedback.  Evaluate it and accept only what makes sense to you; align it with your own vision of what you’re striving to create; discard anything with which you disagree. Make use of only the positive critiques that will advance your skill when you implement them. Positive does not mean only “you were awesome.” It means getting feedback that will help you grow. This could include: “When you held that high note I felt a lot of emotion.” Or: “I noticed that your voice fades at the ends of your phrases.”

End Notes

When you can be yourself, sing with passion and touch your audience emotionally, then you are ready to go into the studio and record a convincing performance.  Develop your performance skills with live audiences if you want to record songs that will catch the judges’ or music supervisors’ attention. Time spent cultivating your artistry and your craft are well worth the rewards.

I’m cheering you on, Jeannie Deva
