Why the Industry Should Kill the Billboard Album Charts

August 16, 2016
Post Image

It’s already been gamed multiple times.  Now, the Billboard Album Charts are about to become a complete industry joke, not to mention a complete waste of resources.

Once upon a time, the Billboard album charts mattered, because albums mattered.  But instead of shifting their charts towards other formats like downloads, streaming, and playlists as albums died, Billboard and its tracking partner Nielsen Soundscan have repeatedly insisted on cramming these formats into an album chart that makes no sense.

Now, calculating labels are starting to game the album chart according to these ridiculous new (and constantly changing) formulas, essentially gaming number one albums without actually selling albums.  And yes, there are charting ‘albums’ now that have sold zero copies.

Last time I checked, 1,500 streams equaled an ‘album sale,’ but there are dozens of different qualifiers that seem to be made up on the spot.  Basically, Billboard’s rules make no sense, and increasingly do nothing to reward actual album sales.

Which means artists like Bon Iver and Arcade Fire, both of whom release real albums, have no way to reliably measure their success because their getting crowded out by fake-me-out albums by DJ Khaled and Epic Records.

Speaking of which, the New York Times did a really good piece on a recent top 10 Billboard album, Epic AF.  Epic Records, part of Sony Music Entertainment, essentially stuffed a compilation up the Billboard album charts without releasing any new material.  The way they did this was simple: they simply gamed the new Billboard/Nielsen rules that count streams and downloads of singles towards the success of an album.  So, songs from Future, DJ Khaled, Young Thug, and French Montana that were meteoric on their own suddenly counted towards an album that you couldn’t buy.

Previously, Epic had been releasing these singles as singles, because everyone listens to singles these days (often as part of playlists).  But by suddenly connecting all of those singles to an album nobody had heard of (or purchased), Epic created a top 10 album out of thin air!

Sneaky, right?  Great for Epic, but really, really bad for Billboard, whose album charts are increasingly becoming a big, fat, irrelevant joke inside the music industry.   But this is just getting started.  Already, Drake gamed a number one album by sticking a previously-released ‘Hotline Bling’ onto his latest release, and other artists are releasing impossibly long albums to game their Billboard chart positions (more singles = better album position).

Meanwhile, Epic Records sneakily re-connected a number of Epic AF singles to DJ Khaled’s latest release, Major Key, to score a number one release.  BS, right?  Well, this isn’t just about bragging rights, because it turns out that number one albums get headlines, which get more sales and marketing.  All for a chart that’s based on arcane, ridiculous mathematical gaming.

The RIAA, equally dialed into antiquity, keeps handing out awards based on album ‘shipments,’ as if the word stopped in 1999.  But making this worse, the RIAA and Billboard have their own different set of album counting rules, which might explain why the RIAA recently handed Rihanna a platinum certification for the album ANTI even though Billboard and Nielsen counted just 460 copies.

So what’s next?  Get ready for a flood of gamed albums competing for the top of the Billboard 200, with many non-existent outside of the charts and some Spotify search.  Epic AF isn’t an album that anyone has purchased, it’s just a compilation of hits.  But looking ahead, every label is now compiling new playlists into new ‘albums,’ with the intent of getting their own trophy on the shelf.

In the process, the Billboard 200 is now about to be the biggest running joke of the music industry.  Yet it still matters as a brand, which means getting a number one album translates into more money for the artists and labels who score.  Which is why everyone’s wasting their time on this.

So what’s the solution?  The big problem here is that the music world has changed since 2001, yet Billboard is pretending that all of these new consumption habits can somehow be translated into an antiquated album format.  But why not just chart the newer formats without all the creative math?  Because if there’s anything that connects back to the actual album, it’s the playlist, which is essentially just another collection of songs.

In fact, playlists are oftentimes the biggest drivers of new music discovery and fan attention.  Just like albums used to be. Above article courtesy of Digital Music News

Rhett May releases new single Latex Lady

August 5, 2016
Post Image
Rhett May

Rhett a singer songwriter of immense talent….RAW…and with beautifully placed guitar riffs, amazing vocals and stellar song writing…Rhett’s music has a very different flavour to the current cookie-cutter rock music…or anything else around today.

Largely influenced by the classic songwriting of John Lennon, the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Rolling Stones, Rhett May is a rock singer who has moulded his own unique sound over several decades in the industry.

With a musical career that spans back to the seventies when his band Lucifer supported legendary rock band Queen, Rhett May is a voice of experience in a rock world which has become increasingly shallow. He has toured the world, seen the music industry from the inside and watched the dark side of the business consume those around him. Throughout those experiences Rhett May continually turned away the excesses of the industry, choosing instead to write his own story as opposed to those who fell into the clutches of addiction.

Having spent a large part of his childhood in Calcutta, India, his guitar led songs are infused with the sounds of the Indian streets. By blending classic sensibilities with a twist of Indian culture he has created a string of upcoming singles, the first of which will be ‘Latex Lady’ to be released on July 29th off his new “Creatures of the Night” album which will street on 2nd September.

Ex-Girlfriend’s Julia Robertson and Norm Adams pair up for single Body Rush now Released by Musik Radio Promotions

July 25, 2016
Post Image

Julia Robertson and Norm Adams pair up  for hit single, Body Rush.  Now released by Musik Radio Promotions, the single has proved a hit, being picked up by the BBC networks and thousands of stations around the world.

Julia Robertson achieved fame in the 90’s, as part of the female R&B group Ex-Girlfriend. The New York based quartet was comprised of Julia, Tisha Hunter, Monica Boyd and Stacy Francis .  Signed to Warner/Reprise Records, Ex- Girlfriend’s debut album, “X Marks the Spot”, yielded the hit singles “Why Can’t You Come Home?” (Billboard #5 U.S. R&B), and “You (You’re The One For Me)”.

Norm Adams is a singer-songwriter, whose creative style has often drawn comparisons to Babyface, Ne-Yo and Bruno Mars. His debut solo album, “This Is My Time”, was produced by Grammy nominated producers Ric Zivic and Ted Wender, and included the Top 10 indie record, “Love Me” (MWR UK #7), and the dance floor filler “Stretch Ya Neck”, whose video was designated by Yahoo as a “must see” .

Destiny came calling when a mutual friend suggested on social media that Julia and Norm do a song together, calling them his “two favorite singers”. Julia responded that she thought it was a great idea, and that she’d love to do it! Norm had written “Body Rush” some time ago, but never quite knew what to do with it because as he elaborated, “I didn’t feel that it was right for me as a solo artist, (or any solo artist for that matter). When presented with the idea of a duet however, I knew it would be perfect! I sent Julia a demo of the song, and she absolutely loved it! A couple of weeks later, she came out to my house in Philadelphia, and we began working on it. The first time our voices blended on the song, we both knew that it was going to be something special.”

“Body Rush” was officially released on May 31, 2016, and the release was celebrated shortly thereafter at an exclusive red carpet event in New York City, where the video was screened to a standing room only crowd.

The “Body Rush” music video was shot over two days in New York and Philadelphia, and was directed by award winning filmmaker Maurice Paramore. The concept is that of a man, sitting alone in a bar, fantasizing about being in a relationship with a beautiful woman that he sees walking by. At the end of the video, much to his surprise, she approaches him as he is getting ready to leave. It is a beautiful love story in keeping with the theme of the song, and the on screen chemistry between Julia and Norm is a reflection of their real life friendship and genuine affinity for one another. Parts of the video reference the duo’s  individual music careers as well.  Half way through the video,  each have solo shots where scenes from  previous music videos are shown on a big screen in the background. Additionally, the opening scene features a cameo appearance by Julia’s ‘Ex Girlfriend’ bandmate, Tisha Hunter.
