How An Indie Artist Can Get Worldwide Tour Dates

The President of Virgin Records said to one of our associates who has recently toured the world with Red Jump Suit Apparatus and Paramore, “You cannot tour without radio airplay”.  Thats a fact because no one will know who you are. This does not mean you have to have a charted hit to tour a specific area of the world.

First, you need to hire a radio promotions company who gets your music to the world, not just a few stations in the US. You can do all the data research you want, but until you release your music to the world, you will not know what areas of the world will play you.   Contact the stations that are playing you and thank them. Offer them radio liners, radio interviews and offer to send them a dozen promo give- away cds. Radio likes to offer their listening audience give- aways. To give your cds away, they play you more, mention who you are more and increase your exposure.

Once you have done this you are that radio stations friend. So ask the stations that are playing you who their advertising venues are. Get their contact information. Call, email those venues. Tell them you are playing on xyz radio station in their town and want to come to their town to perform. Let the radio stations know you are going to do this and they will back you because if the venue hires you the venue will hire them to advertise the performance. This will get you even more exposure on that radio station.

Radio will love you because they got the venues advertising dollars because of you. You get a performance date that is well advertised and a radio station that is playing your music and supporting you. Most likely when you go to perform you will have a full house of people who came to see you. You will sell merchandise, gain fans and if you do a good performance be asked to come back again. Everyone wins.

Odds are you will not become a superstar overnight and it will take several releases, but it will build your business and allow you to tour.

“It used to be that independent musical artists could start with their local scene and create an “in” to bigger fame that way, a sort of osmosis effect. However, the modern era has seen a huge rise in conglomeration, where most radio stations, even those touted as “local”, are in fact owned and their programming controlled by corporations. Like the big labels, these media giants have business, and not necessarily quality, governing the bottom line.

Without being able to count on a lot of local support in the form of airplay, independent artists are now forced to rely on the other tool to get their message out: touring. Again, the life of an indie group in this area is made more difficult due to the lack of support. Venues need to be sought out and sealed by the band or individual themselves, and events are hard-won.”

Does Audio Quality Matter? Part 1

I am asked this question on a regular basis by aspiring artists searching for radio airplay. My answer is based on 30+ years of experience in the music business and running a successful radio promotions program.

Does audio quality matter when it comes to presenting your songs to industry professionals?

Audio quality is everything!  It is the difference in a song being heard and played or thrown into the trash. If an industry professional receives a piece of music that is not properly recorded, mixed or mastered, they generally will throw it away.  This is the first sign to the industry professional that you are not a pro and are wasting their time. 

If you want to succeed in the music “business” – that’s right I added the word  “business” to music as this changes everything – you must be prepared to present your craft as professionally as possible.

Leave your ego at home – there is no place for it in the music business.

Rhett May releases new EP, ‘Insatiable’ with Musik Radio Promotions

The multi-cultural singer/songwriter/musician from “Down Under” is back with an exciting new EP titled ‘Insatiable’.  Recently signed with Musik Radio Promotions, Rhett May looks to make a huge SPLASH with his brand new release.  The EP features five fantastic tracks being emotive and raw and passionate.

The project of recording, ‘Insatiable‘ began when May sent 40-50 tracks to Stephen Wrench and Terry Nails, Musik and Film Production Team.

May relates, “The transition to ‘Insatiable’ wasn’t hard at all…the influence of Stephen and Terry from Musik and Film gave the five songs a raw and exciting edge….I’d been out of the mainstream for so long…I asked them to choose the five songs they felt would help get me back into the sound of today…whatever that was!! Their interpretations and ideas did surprise me at times…but I listened and absorbed and came away with a sense of excitement that Stephen and Terry….. that someone like Musik and Film were actually interested enough to take the time in listening to my songs, tearing them apart…positively…and then helping me put them back together in ways that I hadn’t considered.”

The end result is five songs that are entirely different from each other:

1.”Cocktails and Cannabis”….rock groove

2.”Insatiable”…….Acoustic and melancholy

3.”Hey Peter”…Reggae/Upbeat

4.”Jenny”….Sixties/Beatleish

5.”My Baby’s Got Style”…..Jazz/Rock

The first single, ‘Cocktails and Cannibas’ has been released by Musik Radio Promotions and playing on 5,000+ stations.  The title has garnered much attention in itself. May explains,”The song was initially about a lady whom I had the pleasure of knowing…..and was called ‘Cocktails and Cannibals’.  She had a propensity to overindulge in mind altering substances…but also loved cocktails of all types. She also had an addiction to getting hungry and aggressively oral….. from a sexual perspective… it was a lotta fun…but could get embarrassing in public occasionally. We turned the lyric around a little…and hence ‘Cocktails and Cannabis’.”

Jimmy Rae, Scope Magazine’s resident music critic states, “The overall sound is overly polished with the guitar playing on point and in the zone.  From a production standpoint, “Cocktails and Cannabis” is a winning combination with MAF hitting all the right notes & numbers.”

Tamika

Australia’s talented,  18 yr old Tamika, brought her powerhouse voice to the USA this past year and recorded her first EP with the team at Musik and Film Productions. ‘This Is Who I Am’  currently has 11,000+ stations playing Tamika’s music around the world steadily gaining fans.

It’s not surprising considering since the age of nine, when this vibrant young lady opened her mouth to sing all would stop to listen and be in awe of a voice that sounded way beyond her years.

LaGaylia

 Sweden’s, LaGaylia Frazier released an EP full of soul and blues and funk entitled, That Girl, on August 14, 2013. After 20 plus years in show business she thinks it’s time to get personal and real with the music that has inspired her. She has never been more sincere than now.

With the new EP, That Girl, LaGaylia wants to show what she is really about musically.  Musik Radio Promotions was the perfect vehicle to partner with to ensure LaGaylia’s music was “heard” round the world. Since promotions began in earlier this month, over 4,000 stations have found what LaGaylia is all about.
The EP is all about raw soul and funk.The productions are stripped down, and the EP was recorded during three intensive days in a small studio in Stockholm. Inspiration was found in everything from Prince to Stevie wonder to Portisehead.
