Album Review – Bleed Between The Lies by Never A Hero

November 12, 2012
Post Image

The majority of Never A Hero’s photographs present us with dark clothes, leather straps and psychotic masks. However, once you look past what appears to be some mysterious bondage shoot, you realise you’re actually faced with five extraordinarily talented musicians.

After 2009’s critically acclaimed Socially Awkward EP, the lads set to work on their debut album with the aim to make it rise above the already sky-high bar they had set for themselves. At fourteen tracks long, Bleed Between The Lies has the potential to prove the band name wrong and help Never A Hero become musical…well…heroes.

Opener, Read Between The Lines, eases you into the album with a simple and playful electro rhythm yet the heavy riffs of Burning Skies soon burst this bubble plunging the listener out of the safety zone. The vocalists of Never A Hero are also forced out of their comfort zone as they experiment with brutal screaming and power-driven clean vocals.

Roses Are Dead sees Never A Hero revert back to their older and more familiar style yet the sound is now finely-tuned to the standard you would expect from a band with a few more years of experience tucked away under their belts. The Call proceeds to showcase the entirety of the band’s skills: old and new.

The guitar riffs in Screams Of Silence (quite the oxymoron) take you back to a time when big hair and muscles ruled over the pansies that plague today’s UK charts. By the time you reach track six, Days of Patience, the introductions to each song begin to sound all too familiar with their slow and haunting electronic feel. However, this trend is soon thrown off course by Vogue which demonstrates rock at it’s best throughout the whole three minutes and eighteen seconds.

The second half of Bleed Between The Lies throws us some real stunners ranging from the tranquil, easy-going samples of Between through to the diverse vocal skills demonstrated in Dreamcatcher. Never A Hero jump on the dubstep bandwagon for Hollow yet thankfully, they pull it off in small quantities.

Sunbeam and Stalked have elements comparable to those of Linkin Park and Never A Hero jump to claim the empty spot where Linkin Park resided when they were actually good (yes kids, a long time ago they were half decent).

The album is closed rather unusually with title track, Bleed Between The Lies. Classical piano and strings shine through in this track to calm your mind after the album has thrown you head on through the twists and turns of an epic electro-rock journey.

Although it has taken a little while to set the ball rolling since their formation, the guys have pushed the limits with their debut album and certainly pulled it off. If Never A Hero aren’t widely recognised within the next year or so, there is something seriously wrong with the music scene. Keep an eye on these guys; they’re going to be big.

Fiddler Tim Smith releases new album, “Fiddler Tim Smith & Friends”

November 12, 2012
Post Image

Legendary, iconic and famed are only a few of the adjectives used to describe outstanding Fiddler Tim Smith, but amazing works just as well. Some fiddlers have tone, others speed, still others touch and a sparse few, grace and style. Then there is Tim who performs with a true combination of all the above.

Smith’s new album “Fiddler Tim Smith & Friends”, has an impressive “Who’s-Who” list of backing musician with most of the songs written by the fiddler himself: a difficult task in the Bluegrass genre, where supposedly everything worth playing has long since been played many times over. The overall coloring of the album is provided by Tim’s fiddle, as it should be.

The album will be released through the Musik and Film Records label and is being promoted heavily by Musik Radio Promotions. The single, Broadway Limited, has already been picked up in a week by over 300 stations worldwide.

Musik Radio Promotions has a database of 13,000 radio stations in 60 countries for airplay. These are FM, AM, and Internet stations. We cover many chart reporting stations plus thousands of other stations. Many of these radio contacts are built on decades of personal experience working with world renowned groups and touring!

The album is, in a word, stunning. Tim takes chances, as he has all through his career, and goes beyond “Bluegrass”, delving into Blues, Jazz and Folk, to create a Bluegrass fusion of music that stretches the boundaries on conventional sounds and rhythms.

This first single being released is “Broadway Limited”. It speaks for itself. Smith is stepping out, with stellar performances by all supporting musicians, including Wayne Benson, Eric Ellis, David Guthrie, David Holt, Jeff Huffman, Clyde Mattocks, Will McIntyre, Zak McLamb, Wyatt Rice and Andrew Smith. Check out more information and

The fiddler extraordinaire was born on May 29th, 1955 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. In 1968 the family moved to Sparta, North Carolina. Tim has been playing and learning fiddle tunes since age 7. From ages 9 to 13 he studied classical music and played in the school orchestras in the state of Maryland. All the while, he continued his study and passion for fiddling, playing music with family and friends. His father played good rhythm guitar and would accompany him on the fiddle tunes during the early years. His mom and dad were always encouraging and supportive of all his musical explorations.

Tim has a rich musical heritage of fiddling. His Grandfather Kilby Reeves, of Sparta, NC, was an Appalachian style fiddler, reminiscent of the late fiddler Tommy Jarrell. Uncles Tom and Bert Reeves, both Bluegrass fiddlers, have also been a great source of encouragement as well as mentors to Smith. Reeves, an early Galax, VA fiddlers convention champion and sought after square dance fiddler, has been credited with teaching the legendary fiddler Art Wooten, also from Sparta, NC, to play the fiddle.

After relocating to Sparta, Tim was sought after to play shows, dances, churches and fiddle contests. He played locally with several fine musicians, to name a few, such as Fred Roupe, Bill Joines, The Country Five (a country band featuring Roger Evans and the Wyatt brothers–James, Joe and Jackie).

Shortly following his graduation from Allegheny High School in 1973, Tim won Lester Flatt’s fiddle contest in Pinnacle, NC. The first place prize was a guest appearance with Lester Flatt and The Nashville Grass on The Grand Ole Opry and which he did, in early 1974. That great honor led Tim to a professional career in the music business. Since then, Tim has been awarded various prestigious fiddle prizes including “The North Carolina State Championship” 1st place fiddle prize in 1976, 1st place fiddle prize at the world famous “Galax Fiddlers Convention” in 1977, and “The World Championship” fiddle prize at the internationally renowned “Union Grove Fiddlers Convention” in 1978, to name a few.

Tim has performed and recorded with many notable musicians through the years. From 1979 to 1982, he performed and recorded with the “Bluegrass Cardinals”. Tim performed, as a Bluegrass Boy, with “Bill Monroe and The Bluegrass Boys”. He has performed with Lester Flatt and The Nashville Grass, Jim and Jesse and The Virginia Boys, The Country Gentlemen, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Roy Acuff, Del McCoury, Tony Rice, Country Gazette, David Holt and many others.

Currently, there are six “Tim Smith” CD releases; “1978 World Champion Fiddler”, “Favorite Pastimes”, “Straight From The Heart”, “Plain and Simple”, “The Lonesome Blueridge” and the latest 2012 release, “Fiddler Tim Smith & Friends presented by Musik and Film Records.

Tim lives in Kernersville, NC with his wife, Anita, with whom he shares two children, Melissa and Andrew.

Adrianna Freeman Reviewed By Brian Clough, 2009 CMA International Broadcaster Of The Year

October 5, 2012
Post Image

In 1966 the Lovin’ Spoonfull brought us a great chart entry with a song called ‘Nashville Cats’.

One of the lines in the song related ‘There are Thirteen Hundred and Fifty Two Pickers in Nashville’…. years on of course there are many more all wanting a step on the fame ladder.

Many never make it and just add to that Nashville pickers list.

Others are told “No you’re not right for country music”, “There’s no way we can put money behind an artist with unproven ‘marketing strategy’”, and “Country audiences won’t buy a black female country album”.

These were some of the thoughts and words of record company moguls when Adrianna Freeman was pitching her musical career.

She is now about to prove them wrong as under the direction and production talents of Teddy Gentry from the award winning Alabama group she has just produced her first album.

It is sheer class from the opening track ‘I Will Not Be Your Tennessee’ (released as the first single from the album) through to the fading refrain of ‘There’s Gonna Be A Rainbow’.

The last track could be a fitting omen for Adrianna as the album contains an eclectic mix of light and shade of mid tempo and gentle songs which shows off her vocal range and quality, sometimes , smokey and gentle, but always meaningfull and believable.

Production is brilliant, complimented by great musicianship throughout with a across the board song selection.

Diversity of music is perhaps to the fore with ‘The Price’ featuring Duck 13 who offers a rap injection.

If you fancy being one of the first in years to come, to be able to say you bought her very first album, then treat yourself to a future country star in the making.

Her debut album is released on the Musik and Film record label (musikandfilm.com) and is available from this week on her own site www.adriannafreeman.com.

Apparently her grandfather had dreamed of being a country artist as had her father Ed, the dream has now been passed on to Adrianna and I think it’s about to come true.

She’s one less picker to be counted in Nashville if ever the Lovin’ Spoonfull re-record their song.

Join me from Saturday on the American Connection Show on www.euvue.co.uk for a taster as I’ll be playing three tracks as she features in our Album Of The Week spot.
